On December 22, 1989, Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife fled Bucharest by helicopter amidst angry crowds. Those who weren’t there watched the revolution unfold on their televisions. In 12:08 East of Bucharest, winner of the Camera d’Or at Cannes, director Corneliu Porumboiu offers a humorous take on what did—or didn’t—happen that day. Inspired by an actual televised debate that, 16 years later, asked whether or not a revolution actually occurred, this delightful comedy follows two questionable characters—a Santa Claus impersonator and a teacher with drinking debts—as they reminisce on live TV about the rebellion.
